I've never shot film. Is it hard?
Not at all. The Memory Maker has no settings: wind the dial, turn on the flash and press the button. Every order comes with a quick-start guide and we have step by step video guides on Instagram.
Is the Ubuntu Memory Maker reusable?
yes! The Ubuntu Memory Maker is a reusable film camera, just swap out your used roll of film once it’s finished for a fresh one and start from scratch ;)
Do I need batteries for my Ubuntu Memory Maker?
Yes! You will need 1x brand new AA battery to power the flash on your camera.
How do I develop my film?
Once you have used up the film in your camera, you will have to go to your nearest film development lab/camera shop to get your photos developed. Your local film development lab can develop your photos as physical prints or digital scans, which will be emailed directly to your phone. Development times will vary, but should take approximately 3-10 days.
What if there aren't film processing labs near me?
There are a number of film development labs that accept film via mail or drop off. You can easily find these labs by searching “Film development near me” on google. If you are having any troubles finding a lab to develop your film, please reach out to us at hello@ubuntufilm.co.za so that we can recommend labs in your local area :)
How can i get the developed photos onto my phone?
When you take your film to be developed, your film photos will automatically be emailed to you, which you can then download straight into your gallery.
Is the Memory Maker compatible with any 35mm Film?
Yes! The Memory Maker is compatible with any brand/kind of 35mm film. Each 35mm film roll has either 24 or 36 exposures - the exposures on a roll of film indicate how many photos there are per roll of film.
When should I use the flash?
We recommend always using the flash when taking photos - unless you are shooting in direct sunlight, but we use it anyways. We recommend changing the flash battery every 7-8 weeks, but leaving the flash on will drain the battery life quicker - in which case you load a new battery and you’re good to go.
What do I do if my flash won't turn on?
If your flash isn’t turning on then it’s likely that the battery powering the flash has died. We recommend changing the battery every 7-8 weeks, however, leaving the flash on can drain the battery life quicker - no need to panic though - just load a new AA battery into your camera and you can go straight back to taking stunning pictures!
If your flash isn't going off when you take a photo, then it's likely the film wasn't loaded correctly and we recommend emailing us at hello@ubuntufilm.co.za so we can assist you further.
How do I travel with my new film camera?
Always travel with your memory maker in your hand luggage inside a Ziploc bag - the X-ray machines at customs used to inspect hand luggage use low levels of radiation that won’t cause visible damage to your film or your photos. The Ziploc bag is an extra precaution to protect your film.
How many photos are on a roll of film?
Depending on the brand of film you use, you can get either 24 or 36 photos per roll of film.
